The former capital of Myanmar (formerly Burma). It is located at 16°36′ N latitude and 96°10′ E longitude, at the confluence of the Hlaing River (Rangoon River) flowing from the northwest and the Phegu River flowing from the northeast, 34 km back from the mouth of the river. In June 1989, when the country's name was changed from Burma to Myanmar, Rangoon was renamed to Yangon, the Burmese word for Rangoon.
