Decided to visit Bago, the ancient capital of Burma. And I hired a taxi. It took the Pyay Road up north. It was an hour-trip to Bago. Yet the car stopped a little while later after it started to run. The place was still in the suburb of Yangon. Wondering why the car stopped, the driver said that this place was one of the places worth visiting. Apparently, the driver took a hint for a foreign traveler. The place my taxi stopped was Taukkyan War Cemetery.
The cemetery is a cemetery for Allied soldiers from the British Commonwealth who died in battle during WWII. It meant that most of the soldiers were killed in fighting with the Japanese Army. I didn't know whether the driver was aware of the fact. Anyway, I felt out of place a little because I came from a former enemy alien.
Entering the cemetery, the local people strolled around. The tranquil atmosphere wafted. There was nothing that drove the cruelty of war home but the graves. And a young couple walked hand in hand.
