Okazu Yokocho, as the name suggests, is a shopping street lined with small stores selling prepared foods. However, if you are attracted by the name, you may be a little disappointed. The first impression is that it is a very ordinary shopping street. There are certainly some stores selling prepared foods, but not many, and they are lined with items that you can get without going to the trouble of coming here. It is introduced on the official Tokyo tourist website, but honestly speaking, I don't think it is a good place for sightseeing. To begin with, how many people travel far from home to buy side dishes?
As I was walking along such a shopping street, I found an old-fashioned tsukudani (food boiled in soy sauce) shop. Large bowls of tsukudani were lined up in the window, and the tsukudani was on display. You don't see many tsukudani shops like this anymore. Most tsukudani is packaged in supermarkets, but if there is a store with this kind of atmosphere, it is worth coming all the way here. The problem, however, is that there are very few stores like this in the shopping district.
