Not far from Asakusabashi Station, there is a bridge called “Yanagibashi Bridge”. This is the last bridge over the Kanda River, which flows into the Sumida River. It is a small, inconspicuous bridge, but its construction is magnificent, a sturdy steel-frame bridge built as part of the reconstruction project after the Great Kanto Earthquake. Although the area is now deserted with few pedestrians, it was once a bustling flower district. This is probably why this bridge was chosen for the reconstruction project. Although time has passed and the geisha world has fallen into decline, the bridge still retains the imposing appearance it had when it was built.
As I paused on the bridge and gazed at the cityscape through the steel frame, a man wearing a hat slowly crossed the bridge and disappeared into the town.
