It is commonly said that “Cantonese eat everything except their parents if they have two legs, desks and chairs if they have four legs, cars if they run, submarines if they swim, and airplanes if they fly,” but the situation is a little different in Taiwan, where many people have their roots in the Fujian Province. Visiting a fresh food market, I did not get the impression that everything edible is for sale.
Walking around markets in Taipei and Kaohsiung, it is difficult to see anything unusual. Although there are fruits such as jujubes, which are not found in Japan, for sale, there is nothing that surprises me. The Khlong Toei market in Bangkok, Thailand, was more exciting, with giant water bugs and split-belly frogs for sale. The highlight of local markets in Taiwan may be the snacks rather than the food itself. I briskly walked past a grocery store selling cabbage, peppers, and eggplants, and stopped in front of a store that was frying food in a large pot. What was being fried here was pork. I continued walking through the market, eating my way through the pork, wishing that a convenience store in Japan sold this kind of fried pork, so I could buy it every day.
