As I walked down the aisle, the long table at the butcher's ended and the store changed its appearance. Instead of butcher shops, fish shops appeared. The small store in the photo is one of them.
A woman wearing an apron was selling dried fish, surrounded by other fish for sale. The only fish sold here were small ones. I could tell that the fish were small, but I could not tell what kind of fish they were. The price tags stuck on each pile of dried fish were different, so I guessed that they had a variety of fish, from high-end to low-priced. When I stood in front of the store, the owner was just taking orders. She was looking at the customers.
Although fish sauce is indeed a Thai seasoning, when I hear the word "Thai food," I usually think of meat-based dishes such as gapao rice and tom yum goong. However, when I see so many dried fish sold in the market, it seems that dried fish is used in Thai food more than I expected. Is it used for soup stock?
