Thailand is the country of shrimp, and I had thought that most of the shrimp sold in Japan were imported from Thailand. But in fact, this is not quite true. It is true that Japan imports a large amount of shrimp from Thailand, but it is not the largest importer.
According to statistics on the Teikoku Shoin website, Vietnam was the largest importer in FY2017. The second largest importer was India, with Thailand coming in fifth. Thailand was the fifth largest importer, importing about 12,000 tons.
Although not the largest importer, Thailand is still a major shrimp producer. Although the aquaculture industry seems to have been hit hard by a virus, shrimp farming is still thriving and large quantities of shrimp can be found on the market.
On the other hand, shrimp farming has a dark side: it causes destruction of nature. As a result of the conversion of mangrove forests into shrimp aquaculture ponds, 37.5% of mangrove forests in Thailand have been lost. Shrimp is delicious. At the same time, nature is important. We need to strike a balance.
