In a narrow alleyway in Wan Chai, Hong Kong, there was a small butcher shop—its frontage modest, its depth shallow. Roasted chickens hung casually at the entrance, with no refrigeration in sight. It was raw, unfiltered, yet somehow brimming with a kind of lived-in charm that pulled me in.
At the front, a man worked silently, methodically chopping chicken on a thick, log-like cutting board. The rhythmic thud of the cleaver cutting through meat echoed softly. Behind him, a small household altar sat nestled in the corner, a Chinese deity calmly presiding under a flickering light. It was a space where labor and belief merged, layered with a sense of time that felt uniquely Hong Kong.
Even amid the city's polished infrastructure, scenes like this endure—offering glimpses of a local soul woven into the fabric of modern life.
