Whenever I ride the tram in Hong Kong, I always use my Octopus card. There’s no ticket gate, no conductor. Just a quick tap at the reader near the front door, and that’s it. It’s so smooth, it almost feels too easy.
What many people don’t realize is that the Octopus card was actually the first electronic payment system in the world to implement Sony’s FeliCa technology. Long before Japan’s Suica came into use, Hong Kong had already embraced it. There’s a quiet sense of pride — and even greater surprise — in knowing that a Japanese innovation took root abroad before it did at home.
