“火龍果”—that’s the literal translation of what we know as dragon fruit. With its vibrant red or white flesh speckled with tiny black seeds, it looks more like something from another planet than an ordinary fruit. Despite its flamboyant appearance, the taste is surprisingly mild. Still, it's a staple in Hong Kong’s bustling markets.
At a fruit stall on a street corner in Wan Chai, piles of dragon fruit were stacked high. Their deep magenta skins glowed softly under the shop lights, blending into a vivid tapestry of colors alongside pomelos, persimmons, and pomegranates.
Shoppers with bags in hand leaned in for a closer look while gloved vendors called out prices. A sign at the back read “No Picking”—a quiet plea to customers not to plunge their hands into the produce mountain, though it was easy to imagine some still doing so.
