Ganko-ji Temple has a long history. It is so old that it can be traced back to Asukadera Temple, the oldest full-fledged Buddhist temple in Japan, built by Soga no Umako in Asuka. The temple was moved to Heijo-kyo when the capital was moved to its present location. Although the temple was a large temple along with Todai-ji and Kofuku-ji in the Nara period, one can only imagine how prosperous it was in the past from its cozy precincts. The temple grounds exude an atmosphere of serenity. Although this temple is listed as both a national treasure and a world heritage site, it does not seem to attract many visitors.

While it is easy to see that the main building of Gokurakubo shown in the photo, which still uses building materials from the Asuka and Nara periods, is a national treasure, it is interesting to note that the small five-story pagoda enshrined in the storage room is also a national treasure. Although the small pagoda is about 5.5 meters high, it is smaller than the actual five-story pagoda and is not something a person could climb. Some say it is a model of one-tenth of the Kokubunji pagoda, a so-called model-like structure. This pagoda is designated a national treasure not as an "artifact" but as a "structure. If it had survived for more than 1,000 years, the elaborate plastic model could have become a national treasure.
