Among the historic areas of Nara, Naramachi is an area that still retains its historical townscape, with narrow streets lined with townhouses built since the Edo period. In such an area, there are many private stores, and you can see signs of old-fashioned stores in the photos. It is a townscape that makes me feel nostalgic.
Even the most historic streetscape is no match for the old five-story pagoda that juts out into the sky at the end of the shopping street. The pagoda in the photo is the five-story pagoda of Kofuku-ji Temple, which is both a national treasure and a World Heritage site, and was rebuilt in 1426. It has an even older history than the townhouses built after the Edo period. What is more, Kofuku-ji itself, where the five-story pagoda is located, is even older. Kofuku-ji, which was a clan temple of the Fujiwara clan, is said to have been founded in 669. This was during the Asuka period, the year when Emperor Tenji bestowed the Fujiwara family name on Nakatomi Kamatari, who succeeded in the Taika Reform.
