The most eye-catching part of Nigatsudo is the stage. The view from the stage, which is perched on a slope, is very good, and there are benches on which visitors can take a break. The west bureau is located near the stage and contains an incense burner, so you can tell that this is the main entrance to the temple. Inside the west bureau is the off-limits hall of worship, and further inside is the inner sanctuary where Shusho-e ceremonies are held. It is in the inner sanctuary that the main deity, the eleven-faced Avalokitesvara, resides.
What makes the structure of Nigatsudo different from that of an ordinary temple is that the inner sanctuary, which houses the principal image, is surrounded by a space called a bureau. Each bureau has its own altar. The photo shows people praying at the altar located in the east bureau on the back side of the temple. Although there were many people on the stage, many people did not seem to think that there was an altar on the back side, and the east bureau was deserted.
