Walking slowly from Sangatsudo, you will reach a slightly open space. In the center of the open space stands a wooden structure. It is the bell tower of Todai-ji Temple, one of the many buildings on the temple grounds that have been designated national treasures.

The bell in Todai-ji Temple, where the gigantic Great Buddha resides, is also huge. The bell hanging from the bell tower is said to weigh 26.3 tons, but it is too heavy to get a sense of it just by looking at the numbers. When I looked up the weight of other similar objects, I found that it was about the same as that of a Type 16 maneuver combat vehicle of the Japan Self-Defense Forces. For a moment, I was impressed, but I couldn't really feel the weight of 26 tons. After all, if it is too heavy, it is difficult to make it feel real.

At the very least, it is an undeniable fact that it is incredibly heavy, and if it fell on our heads, there would be no room to breathe. Historically, the bell has fallen several times, so it would be better to escape from under the bell first when an earthquake strikes.
