This castle was the palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom. And the architecture in the photo is the main hall of it. The Ryukyu Islands, now one of Japanese prefecture, formed an independent country until 1879.
In 1945, during the Battle of Okinawa, it was almost completely destroyed. In 1992, it was reconstructed on the original site based on photographs, historical records, and memory. And now it is listed on UNESCO World Heritage list.
Unfortunately, this architecture was burned to the ground again by a fire disaster on October 31, 2019.
