Despite its flat and small appearance, the main hall of Shinyakushi-ji Temple in the photo is home to many national treasures. The main statue of the seated wooden Yakushi Nyorai and the standing statues of the Twelve Heavenly Generals (11 statues are designated as national treasures) are located in the main hall. The most eye-catching statues are the standing Twelve Heavenly Generals, believed to date from the Tenpyo period (710-794), and as you enter the dimly lit hall, you are greeted by the 1,300-year-old statues with their colorful expressions.

Gazing at the standing statues of the Twelve Heavenly Generals guarding the seated statue of Yakushi Nyorai in the center of the hall, one could almost forget that time is passing and the hall is filled with such serenity. Despite the fact that the temple is well worth seeing, few people visit Shin-Yakushi-ji Temple. This is in contrast to Todai-ji Temple and Kasuga Taisha Shrine, which are within walking distance of Shin-Yakushi-ji Temple and are filled with tourists.
