Since ancient times, Kasuga Taisha Shrine has been dedicated to the worship of stone lanterns, and there are said to be as many as 3,000 hanging lanterns and stone lanterns in total. Stone lanterns line the side of the approach to the shrine, and hanging lanterns line the cloisters of the shrine grounds. Most of the lanterns were donated to the shrine, and the oldest one was donated by Fujiwara Tadamichi, the chief adviser to the Emperor at the time, in 1137.

It is possible to donate even today. However, its price is not mentioned on the official website and is not clear. One theory says that the cost, including production, management, and lights for Manto lanterns, starts from 2 million yen for a hanging lantern and 2.5 million yen for a stone lantern, but I don't know if this is true or not. The only way to know for sure is to ask Kasuga Taisha when you are serious about making a donation.
