Kofuku-ji Temple was originally built as a clan temple of the Fujiwara clan. The Fujiwara family was founded by Fujiwara no Kamatari, who was active in the 7th century, and produced a number of famous historical figures. In modern times, their descendants include Saionji Kimimochi and Konoe Fumimaro, who served as prime ministers.
The Kofuku-ji Temple, which boasted such power, was caught in the storm of the abolition of Buddhism after the Meiji Restoration and faced a period of hardship. The vast grounds of the temple were taken away and turned into Nara Park, and 83 temples and six monasteries were abolished.
A base platform has been restored and staged on the site where the Nandaimon (Great Southern Gate) once towered until it was destroyed by fire in 1717. From here, one can get a good view of the majesty of Chukondo. The distance to Central Golden Hall is quite long, and although the Kofuku-ji precincts seem vast even today, they were once even more so.
