Thailand is a country with a long coastline. Although the distance is over 3,000 kilometers, the coastal fishing industry is not very well developed. Most of the fish sold here at Khlong Toei Market are freshwater or brackish water fish. I have a feeling that Thai people do not eat fish as much as Japanese people. The only Thai dishes that come to mind are meat dishes like Gapao and Khao Mangai. However, it is interesting to note that small shrimp are often included in all dishes. But that may just be my lack of familiarity with Thai food.
With these thoughts in mind, I walked around the area where the fish shops are clustered. Although I had assumed that the locals did not eat much fish, there were quite a few fishmongers doing business and a large number of fish on display in their shops. The woman in the photo worked at one of these fishmongers. She was wearing a plastic glove only on her right hand. When I pointed my camera at her, the woman smiled back at me without stopping her busy hands.
