A young man in a lungi was sitting on the side of the road in Malda. He was a butcher, and although there was nothing in the hut, the place where he was sitting seemed to be his store. A large chopping board made of logs was placed in front of him. Because he was at work, he held a long knife in his hand. The peak of the knife was warped, making it looked like a weapon in a movie.
In India, meat is often butchered at butcher shops in towns and sold on the spot. It is not unusual to see butchers during walking around town, and it is not unusual to see butchers rustling meat. The man in this photo was also butchering meat that he had purchased and selling it on the spot.
This butcher was just cutting mutton with a knife. The meat had been roughly sliced, and only the head was left on the chopping board. If you look closely, you can see that the eyes were still there, staring into the void. It's a bit scary. I can only hope that the spirit of the goat has made it to heaven safely, given its appearance like this.
