Hearing that I could enter a place I normally cannot, I came to Adachi Market in Senju, Tokyo, on this day. This is the only central wholesale market in Tokyo specializing in marine products, and is usually used by professionals for purchasing. The general public is not allowed to enter. Adachi Market is open to the general public on "Adachi Market Day," which is held once every two months.
Although I was unaware of it, the "Adachi Market Day" is quite famous, and there were many people like me walking around the market, who at first glance looked like ordinary consumers. Of the products sold here, about 8% are tuna, 30% are fresh fish, and the remaining 62% are frozen or salted and dried products. Tuna is the most popular. Since it was a day for the general public, there was a tuna dismemberment show, and a crowd gathered around the tuna brokers selling their products.
With the crowds by my side, I walked around the less crowded area. Whether there were customers or not, there was still work to be done. People were busy working here and there in the market. At one wholesaler, a man with a towel wrapped around his head was silently slicing fish.
