The duck mother-lion market in Tainan was bustling with activity, and the fishmonger was busily at work. On a round wooden chopping board was a fish that appeared to be a lice eye fish (sabahi), and the man was in the process of cutting a slit in its flesh. In the markets of Tainan, you can often find lice fish for sale. It is not a familiar fish in Japan, but it is very popular here.
The flesh of the lice fish can be seen to have straight slits cut into it in a regular pattern. The man is working feverishly with his hands, seemingly oblivious to my presence. Perhaps he was unaware that I was standing right next to him.
His deftness was so impressive that I couldn't help but admire it. It seemed to me that an ordinary scene in a marketplace shone with the brilliance of craftsmanship. The only thing that bothered me was that the man was wearing gloves of different colors. One was blue, the other yellow. I left without knowing the answer to whether he was just too busy to pay attention to matching gloves, or whether there was some special reason.
