I came to the Shiseido Gallery in Ginza when I heard that Ishiuchi Miyako's work was on display. Ishiuchi Miyako is a leading Japanese photographer and winner of the Kimura Ihei Award. Her solo exhibition 'Ishiuchi Miyako, My First Time in Tokyo was in Ginza' was being held at the gallery.
Born in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture, and raised in Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Ishiuchi Miyako's first visit to Tokyo was to Ginza, where her aunt took her to a jazz cafe. Leaving aside the truth or fiction, this title sounds cool to me as a person born and raised in Tokyo. The name Ginza may have an image, but it would also be cool to say "My first visit to Tokyo was Shinjuku", "My first visit to Tokyo was Ikebukuro" or "My first visit to Tokyo was Akabane" instead of Ginza. The fact that you chose wherever you went of your own volition gives meaning to your first time in Tokyo.
In that sense, I, who was born in an obstetrics and gynaecology clinic in Tokyo, did not choose the place that would become my first Tokyo of my own volition. For me, my "first Tokyo" is just a kind of flat surface that is always there when I look back.
