The corridor on the second floor of the Kyauktan market was deserted. Stores were lined up, but few customers were in sight. Perhaps it was natural, because unlike the first floor, there were many precious metal merchants here. Buying precious metals is much more unusual than buying food. There were chairs lined up in the front of the precious metal store, but no one was sitting on them. The owner must be bored.
Myanmar is famous for its rubies, but the precious metal dealers in this market did not seem to sell any. All they sell are gold products. In the showcases of the rickety precious metals dealers, only gold-colored items are on display. Perhaps there are no rubies near Kyauktan. Indeed, Mogok, a famous ruby producing area, is much further north than Yangon and closer to Mandalay. Even if Myanmar rubies, which are the rarest and most expensive, are sold, they may be too expensive for the residents of this rural town to afford.
