As the man hawking shaving products left, I was once again surrounded by silence. The second floor of the market in the center of Kyauktan was relaxed, and I leaned against the corridor railing, idly watching the traffic. The street in front of the market was busy, but not crowded. People were walking this way and that, and vehicles were parked along the side of the road. Even from where I was standing, I could see a variety of vehicles parked along the street. Trucks were parked, motorcycles were parked, bicycle cabs were parked.
As I gazed at them, I realized that I had never seen motorcycles in the center of Yangon, whereas I had seen them in Kyauktan. In Myanmar, which is experiencing economic development, it would not be surprising if a large number of motorcycles occupied the roads like in Vietnam and Thailand, but I could not remember seeing such a scene in Yangon. It seems that motorcycles are not allowed to ride in Yangon. It must be very rare in such a country. I am not sure what the reason is for the prohibition, but it seems that the rule that was enacted during the military regime is still in effect.
