Bogyoke Aung San Market in the center of Yangon has many stores. The market has the same trashy atmosphere as other markets, but it is a little different from other markets. Most of the stores in the market are souvenir shops for tourists. Myanmar is a jewelry producing country, so there are jewelry shops, and although I am not sure what they are, there are also art dealers selling paintings. There are also many stores selling handicrafts. However, there are no stores selling food or daily necessities. The guidebooks say that this market is the best place to buy souvenirs. This is a tourist market without a doubt.
I was walking along the corridor facing Bogyoke Aung San Road in the market. I noticed that a vendor was walking from the other side. The man was carrying brooms of various kinds. He is a broom vendor. Since the people walking through this market are all tourists, it is hard to imagine that they would be willing to buy a broom that reminds them of their daily lives. The man's customers are the stores that have opened in this market. Vacuum cleaners are not common here, and sweeping the floor with a broom is probably the norm.
