I went downstairs and again walked down the hallway on the first floor of the Myo Ma Market. The market is filled to overflowing with merchandise, but there are few shoppers. There was only a tranquil atmosphere in the air, and the workers seemed to have no time to do anything. Unlike the Bogyoke Aung San Market in Yangon, there were no touts here. They just wait quietly for customers to arrive.
Meanwhile, I saw a figure walking from the other side of the corridor. Fortunately or unfortunately, the figure was not a shopper. It was a Buddhist monk clad in a robe. The elderly monk stopped in front of a clothing store, waiting for someone to come out. Eventually a shopkeeper came out from inside and handed something to the monk. It was hard to believe that the monk had come to buy everyday clothes. I am not even sure if monks have everyday clothes to begin with.
In any case, the monks had not come to shop, but to receive alms. What he received must have been some kind of charity. The majority of people in Myanmar are Buddhists. It is not unusual to see Buddhist monks when walking around town. Monks, who do not engage in production activities, live their daily lives by receiving donations.
