Keikyu's Shinagawa station is a complicated place. Although there are only three platforms, there are many different types of trains running through the station. Even for trains heading south from here, there are two main destinations, one to the Miura Peninsula and the other to Haneda Airport. In addition, there are different types of trains for these two destinations, such as special, express, and ordinary.
For people who are used to riding trains, it may be easy to figure out how far to go on a limited express train and then change to a regular train, but for people who are not used to riding trains, it is difficult. It is difficult for people who are not used to riding trains to know which train they should take.
There are many people who ask the station staff, and it must be difficult for the station staff to answer each question. I think the floor of the platform is the result of the railroad company's efforts to deal with this problem. There is a sign that says where to line up for each train you want to take, such as here for people taking the limited express, here for people heading to the airport, and so on. However, the floor was covered with such information, so it was not immediately obvious. It was no less complicated.
