I met a young man wearing Levi's cap in Yangon. From the appearance, he looked Indian. Myanmar was part of the British-Indian Empire until 1937, so it is not unusual to see people who look Indian.
That's not the surprising point, though it can be seen in the photo. The white stuff on the face is much more intense. This white stuff is called Thanaka, which is applied to sunscreen, and many people in this country walk around with it on their faces. Adults are also painting Thanaka and children are painting Thanaka. This young man is one such person. This young man was messily applying it to his face as if he were scribbling.
Walking around the city at this rate, I feared that the sunburn would become speckled, but he didn't seem to care about it. Maybe it doesn't matter because he already has a jet-black skin tone.
