As I walked through Asakusabashi, I came upon an old-fashioned store with an eye-catching stone facade. It appears to have been out of business for a long time, and the place where the signboard would have once hung is empty and the shutters are tightly closed.
This style of architecture is called “billboard architecture,” and many stores were built in this style after the Great Kanto Earthquake. Today, they have a retro flavor, which I personally like, but as time goes by, there are fewer and fewer of them. This store has also remained closed for a long time and may be torn down in the near future.
Looking out the front from a short distance away, many people pass by the store, but no one stops. The pedestrians and cyclists in the photo also passed by the shutters as if nothing had happened.
