As I walked through the nondescript residential streets of Kolkata, I saw a yellow taxi parked at the end of the road. Locals only take rickshaws and don't often use taxis. The driver's house must be close by because it's unlikely to wait for customers in a place like here. There were not many people around here, and some of the apartment windows were closed even though it was midday. The driver's house must be somewhere in these aging apartments.
All the taxis in Kolkata are the same old model called Hindustan Ambassador, but they are pretty. The car body is based on the Maurice Oxford Series III, which was first produced in England in 1956, and whose entire production facility was purchased by Hindustan Motors and has been produced in India since 1958. In other words, the car's style was designed more than half a century ago. But it seems to have gone around and still works well today.
