There were many people at Lungshan Temple. This is one of the most popular tourist spots in Taipei, visited by tourists like me. It is even introduced in Japanese guidebooks as the best power spot in Taiwan. Yet, when I looked around the temple grounds, there were far more local worshippers than tourists. This temple is both a tourist attraction and a temple that is extremely popular among the locals. Looking at the large number of people visiting the temple, one can clearly see that the deity enshrined in this temple is still active and is not just a tourist attraction. The faces of the local worshippers were serious, unlike mine who was just visiting to see the sights.
While most of the locals were praying at one of the many altars, some were sitting still at the edge of the temple grounds. They are people like the men in the photo. These people all have books in their hands. I glanced at the pages and saw that they were filled with Chinese characters. I could not make out what was written in the book, but it must have been a scripture. These men were sitting in the precincts of the temple, quietly reading sutras.
