On the side of the road, I pull out my phone; I launch the Uber app and go through the process of getting a ride. I had installed the app before, but this was my first time actually using it. I entered the location where I was waiting and my destination, and waited for the car to arrive.
After a while, a car pulled up in front of me. It seemed to be an Uber car. I opened the door and got in. The driver didn't say anything in particular, and the car left. Since I had entered my destination in advance, I didn't have to explain my destination to the driver, who didn't speak my language, and I arrived at my destination smoothly. What a convenient app! There is no need to tell the driver where you are going, and since payment is made via the app, there is no need to negotiate the price. I would love to see Uber become available in Japan as a means of dispatching cars other than cabs.
The destination of my Uber ride was the Lungshan Temple, a major tourist attraction in Taipei. The temple grounds are crowded with worshippers. Of course, there were tourists like me, but most of them were locals. The local people who come to the temple to pray for blessings are serious in their prayers. The woman in the photo was praying earnestly with her hands together in front of the altar on the temple grounds.
