The three-storied pagoda in this photo stood near the west gate of the temple. It was originally built in 847. Because the temple was on the hill, the cityscape was spreading to the other side of the pagoda. So the pagoda has been watching the human behavior from above over 1000 years.

Kyoto was a city of the court aristocracy. The pagoda could watch the deceptions, the conspiracies and others of them.
