On either side of the narrow alleyway, small drinking establishments were crammed together. Each of them had a signboard in front of their storefront to advertise their existence. Most of them were square signs, but occasionally a round sign caught my eye, perhaps in an attempt to differentiate themselves from other establishments.
During the daytime, Golden Gai was quiet and still. None of the bars had opened for business yet, and it was clear that the place would really come into its own after dark. Still, with so many bars gathered here, it is not easy to decide which one to enter. It seems to take a bit of courage to step into a new place for the first time, since you can't tell what the inside of a place looks like from its signboard.
