Inside Marunouchi Oazo is a spacious bookstore that is a must for book lovers. As I left the store, satisfied with my tour, I caught sight of a businessman through the window. He was standing in what appeared to be a smoking area, taking a break from his work. It was the weekend, but he probably still had some work to get done.
Japanese salarymen are often associated with the image of “workaholics. Indeed, according to a 2015 OECD survey, the average annual workday in Japan is 1719 hours, considerably longer than Germany's 1371 hours. Surprisingly, however, it was shorter than the 1,790 hours in the United States. This fact is a bit surprising. Japan is known as a workaholic, but it seems that it is not necessarily the hardest working country in the world.
