I was wandering around Kabukicho. This area is densely packed with bars and slightly seedy stores, but the atmosphere seems calmer than in the past. If Ginza is the glamorous “front face” of Tokyo, I had the impression that Kabukicho was the “back face,” but that shadowy atmosphere seems to have faded. Especially when walking around in the daytime, this impression becomes even stronger.
I suddenly peeked into an alley between buildings and found a cat there. A bowl was placed in front of it, and it looked like it was just eating. The cat was engrossed in its meal and showed no interest in my presence. I don't know if it was a domesticated cat or a stray, but its appearance gave off no hint of the danger or disquieting atmosphere that this place once had. In the late afternoon light, the cat was simply quiet and peaceful.
