Judging by its name, Opera City, the Opera House is supposed to be the center of this place. It is home to the New National Theater for Ballet, Contemporary Dance and Theater, as well as the Opera. But that is not all. There is a concert hall dedicated to classical music with a pipe organ, a small chapel-like hall, a recital hall, and many other facilities for holding concerts. But I have no connection with any of them.
When I hear "Opera City" in Hatsudai, I think of the Art Gallery and the Galleria. The Art Gallery, which mainly exhibits modern and contemporary art, not only has works by Yoshitomo Nara and Lee Ufan, but also often shows photographic works as part of special exhibitions. The Galleria, on the other hand, is the semi-outdoor space that connects the high-rise portion of the building to the New National Theater. This is where the photo was taken. The ceiling here is high, giving a sense of openness. Coming from the Koshu Kaido side, I like to walk up the gentle stairs of the Galleria between the buildings because I feel like I am walking among ancient ruins, even though they have not yet become ruins.
