I am afraid of heights, but I quite like climbing up to the observation deck of a skyscraper. This may sound contradictory, but it seems that my brain cannot recognize that I am in a high place once I am above a certain height. When I look at the surface of the earth from the upper floors of a high-rise building, I do not feel a sense of being creeped out when I see a human being walking on the ground, which looks as small as an alinko. I can genuinely enjoy the scene that unfolds. Considering that it is more frightening to climb a halfway up a tall building, I feel that climbing above a certain height does not evoke a sense of fear because the brain judges it to be an impossible height.
Thus, on this particular day, I was in the observation room of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, which is located 202 meters above the ground. The observation deck, which is free to climb, is very popular, and on this day there were many tourists who had come from abroad as well as Tokyo residents like myself. Everyone likes the view from high places. And since this place is "above a certain height," I was not afraid. The scariest one I have ever been to was at the top of Ed-Dil in Petra, Jordan, which is halfway up the mountain. I remember I was so scared that I thought I might pee my pants.
