The exhibition at the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery that day was an exhibition by a photographer named Rinko Kawauchi. In most photo exhibitions, I tend to just look at the photos on the wall, even though the number of photos may vary. That was my intention when I entered the exhibition room that day, but things were a little different. Of course, there were printed photographs on display, but they were not just prints on the wall. There were displays, three-dimensional works, animated works, and, most importantly, decorated rooms, which made it a different kind of exhibition from a mere photography exhibition.
It is true that Rinko Kawauchi's works are based on photographs. However, when I looked at the exhibition, I felt that her title did not fit the framework of a photographer, and that she would be better described as a contemporary artist. Hiroshi Sugimoto, who I thought of as a photographer when he photographed movie screens in old theaters and drive-ins and dioramas at the American Museum of Natural History, has somehow expanded his field of activity to that of a contemporary artist rather than a photographer. Rinko Kawauchi may be following a similar path.
