The restored roof is a bright pastel color, which will look even better when the surrounding area is covered with snow. The pictures I saw on the Internet of Hakodate's Cathedral of the Resurrection towering above the snowy landscape were all beautiful. But fortunately or unfortunately, this was not the season for snow. The surrounding grass was green and yellow flowers were blooming here and there. The Cathedral of the Resurrection of Hakodate Orthodox Church was smaller than I had expected.

Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church of Hakodate was first established in 1860 in the Russian Consulate. The era name was still Man'en. This was before the Meiji Restoration. St. Nikolai, one of the oldest Orthodox churches in Japan, whose name is preserved in the Nikolai Cathedral in Ochanomizu, Tokyo, also went to Hakodate when he first came to Japan.

The current Cathedral of the Resurrection was rebuilt in 1916 after being destroyed by the Great Hakodate Fire of 1907. The roof is pastel in color, as if it were newly built, because of the extensive conservation and repair work that took place from 2021 to 2022. As I walked around the small cathedral, I felt that the rounded rear part of the building was more solemn than the front part, where only the entrance and the bell tower were visible and the building was slender.
