Although it was still chilly, the sun was shining brightly. Many people walking in front of the Odakyu Department Store in Nishi-Shinjuku were frowning at the sunlight. The young woman in the photo also raised her arm in front of her face to block the sunlight as she walked.
The red wall in the background is the main building of Odakyu Department Store. It opened in 1967, which means that it has stood here since shortly after the vast Yodobashi water treatment plant at the west exit was abolished. In other words, it is a living witness to the development of the west exit of Shinjuku Station.
The main building, which has been such a living witness to the development of the west exit of Shinjuku Station, will cease operations in September 2022. Although it is said that this is due to the redevelopment of the West Exit, it is also true that the department store format is no longer suited to the current times. As evidence of this, a 48-story high-rise building is scheduled to be completed on the site of the main building, but it has not yet been decided whether the Odakyu Department Store will be housed in it.
Although it is not certain whether the department store will disappear from this location, it is certain that once the high-rise building is completed, people will no longer frown at the strong sunlight in this location.
