When I visited the Yamuliao Market in Tainan, the mackerelheads lined up in front of the fishmonger's store caught my eye. These fish heads were not placed haphazardly, but neatly and orderly. The heads were turned up so that they looked as if they were sticking out of the table, like a sea eel peeking out of a hole.
But Sabahi's round, adorable eyes, of course, didn't move an inch. The scene was surreal itself, somewhat charming but at the same time somewhat eerie, with a strange stillness in the air. The expressionless eyes of the heads in the line seemed to be staring at me, giving me a somewhat unrealistic sensation.
On the other side, the fishmonger was busily at work. He was processing several fish, one after the other, and going about his business with great dexterity. For him, this surrealistic scene must be a familiar part of his daily life. The strangeness of the market for visitors may be a common scene here.
