At the Yamuliao Market I visited in Tainan, many fish heads called milkfish were lined up in front of the fishmonger's store. They were not arranged haphazardly, but neatly and orderly. The heads were arranged so that they looked as if they were poking their heads out of the table, like a conger eel poking its head out of a hole. But their lovely round eyes did not move at all. The sight of these motionless eyes in a row was a little surreal and mysterious.
On the other side of the line of the heads, a fishmonger was busily at work. The fishmongers seemed to be working as if nothing had happened. This surreal scene may be an everyday scene for the fishmongers.
