Pushed by laziness, I came up the stairs to the hallway on the second floor of the market. There were no goods here, no shopkeepers with time on their hands. There was only the market corridor stretching out below me. It was raining lightly and the ground was wet. I saw a few people walking around with umbrellas. Like the Japanese, Myanmar people immediately put up umbrellas when it starts to rain. It is not unusual for people in Myanmar to carry their own umbrellas when they go out. The students I met just a few minutes ago all had umbrellas.
Unlike in neighboring Bangladesh and India, umbrellas are commonplace commodities in Myanmar. One of the reasons for this is the large number of cheap umbrellas coming in from China. Umbrellas are also inexpensive for local people. Perhaps this is why I did not see anyone repairing umbrellas for a living when I walked around. In Myanmar, people buy new umbrellas without repairing broken ones.
