On this day, I headed south again from Yangon. My destination was a town called Thanlyin. Kyauktan, which I visited the day before yesterday, is located in the south of Yangon, but Thanlyin is on the way to Yangon. It had been eight years since I had visited there on my previous trip to Myanmar.
Times have changed in the past eight years, and now I can check my location on my smartphone as I travel. The cab was going briskly and I was relaxing in the back seat of the cab, occasionally checking my position. Then the cab, driven by the man I was talking to about leaving it to him, passed my destination, Thanlyin, in no time at all. When I told this to the man, he smiled shyly and made a U-turn.
Once past, I arrived safely at the Myo Ma Market in Thanlyin. The building itself looks the same as it did eight years ago. The building itself looks the same as it did eight years ago, and when I stepped inside, I saw the same small stores lined up in rows as they were eight years ago.
As I was making my way down the central aisle, I saw a man and a woman standing in the middle of the aisle. The man was handing the woman a large bag. The woman, however, was already carrying a large box. It seemed that the woman would have to walk with two loads. The man who handed her the bag was empty-handed, and it seemed as if the roles were somehow reversed.
