When I was walking in the center of Yangon, I saw two girls. They were leaning against a wire fence and chatting. They must be friends because they were chatting happily, but their ancestral backgrounds seemed to be different.
The girl on the left looks like a Burmese, which accounts for about 70% of Myanmar's total population, while the girl on the right looks Indian. That's right. Myanmar used to be a part of British India, so there are more people of Indian descent living there than you might think.
The girl on the right with the hair band had Thanaka painted on her cheeks. The white Thanaka shone against her brown skin. When I pointed the camera at her, the girl on the left looked at me, but the girl with the painted Thanaka looked away as if she was not interested at all.
