I left the Oak Pho Su Station and started walking toward the center of Thanlyin. As I was walking along the straight road, I saw a kiosk standing by the side of the road. The tin-roofed hut looked a bit like a shack, but it sold a variety of items. Plastic containers were lined up at the counter, and snacks hung from the eaves. Locals who had come to shop stood around. In the absence of so-called convenience stores, small kiosks like this one must be very useful.
I did not see any convenience stores in Thanlyin, but I saw convenience stores here and there in the center of Yangon. They all seem to be owned by Myanmar capital, and there are no 7-Eleven or Family Mart here. Ippudo, a ramen noodle shop, has already established a business here, but I could not find any Japanese-affiliated convenience stores. It may be that foreign capital is prohibited from entering the convenience store industry.
If convenience stores, which are plentiful in Yangon, were to expand into Thanlyin, these local kiosks would surely be wiped out.
