Khao San Road was filled with a long, quiet atmosphere. The number of travellers coming to Khao San Road, once one of the world's leading cheap accommodation areas, seems to be decreasing. This is the age of the internet. It is possible to find cheap accommodation without coming to a cheap accommodation street. Under these circumstances, cheap accommodation has almost disappeared from Khao San Road, and the street has been transformed into a busy shopping street favoured by Westerners. Not many people stroll down Khao San Road in the daytime, which is lined with open-terrace bars. Even so, many tuk-tuks were parked on the roadside and drivers were waiting for customers. Because there are not many people walking around, the drivers seem to have a lot of time on their hands. The tuk-tuks that remained stationary were like ornaments decorating the road.
According to the book 'A Walk Through Thailand's Mysteries', it was the bicentenary of the transfer of the capital to Bangkok in 1983 that triggered a shift of cheap accommodation from the Chinatown area to the Khao San Road area. It started when an increasing number of travellers started renting rooms on Khao San Road. Eventually, more and more people started renting rooms to travellers as well, and many backpackers began to visit the area for cheap accommodation with modest facilities, forming a cheap accommodation district. These cheap accommodation areas are changing once again. Times change.
