The street of Tainan stretched straight ahead. Both sides were filled with stores and eateries, each with its own sign. As a matter of course, Taiwan belongs to the Chinese cultural sphere, so the signs on the road were written in Chinese characters. There were no signs written in the alphabet. It was a spectacular sight to see the streets filled with Chinese characters.
As a Japanese, I can guess what kind of store it is by looking at the Chinese characters, but for a Westerner who is not familiar with Chinese characters, all of them must be gibberish. This feeling is probably the same as what I feel when I travel to Arabic countries.
