The street stretched straight. Many shops and restaurants were side by side. And each of them hung their own signboards. Because this city belonged to the Chinese cultural area, all the signboard which I could see were written in Chinese characters. No alphabets were used here. I thought it was quite a sight.
I could understand what was written in some vague way because I am Japanese. Yet they were all Greek to the Westerner who was not familiar with Chinese characters.
