I stopped at Koshu Kaido in front of Shinjuku Station. This is an elevated bridge, with several roads intersecting underneath. I could see people walking along these roads without interruption. From a distance, their movements seemed to follow a pattern, but in reality, none of them were walking at the same rhythm. The end of the road where it intersected perpendicularly with Koshu Kaido was sucked into the shadows of buildings, and even though I knew the east entrance was there, the specifics of the road were vague and ambiguous.
As I watched the road, I saw people emerge from the shadows and others disappear into the shadows. The scene was somewhat like watching a strange play. The boundary between the place in shadow and the place in the sun looked like the sleeve of a stage. People seemed to be coming out of the stage sleeves and playing some kind of role on the stage.
Just then, a woman quietly emerged from offstage. She walked to the center of the stage as if guided by something invisible. And I just kept watching the scene.
